    DELSU VC LEADS THE UNIVERSITY’S MEDICAL TEAM ON A DAY FREE-MEDICAL OUTREACH

    One of the significant visions of Delta State University, Abraka, amongst learning, research , innovation, and the dissemination of knowledge is “community service”.

    Over the years, DELSU has contributed immensely to Abraka community in fostering innovation, increasing property value, promoting social cohesion, enhancing educational opportunities, promoting local culture, and attracting tourism. Today was an exceptional episode of community engagement as the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samuel O. Asagba , fitly represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Hilary Ijeoma Owamah, led the National Association of Doctors in the University Health Services, NADUHS DELSU and the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) DELSUTH on a catchy Wednesday free-medical programme.

    Over 500 residents with multifarious health conditions at Umiaghwa & Oruarivie Kingdoms, Abraka assembled in an integrated manner at the Oruarivie and Umiaghgwa town halls, Abraka and were individually rendered medical screening, diagnosis, treatment , health education and referrals without any medical fees. Free medical eye glasses, assorted drugs, and others were equally given out.

    It was indeed a consummate charitable gesture by the amiable vice-chancellor.

    The residents expressed their gratitude to the vice-chancellor, the university medical team, and the entire university community for such a generous and supportive scheme rendered to them. They appealed that the university should continue with the good work.

    DELSU HOSTS SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE: SET TO ACCENTUATE THE EVOLUTION OF SCIENCE IN OUR AI WORLD

    The South-South Zonal Conference of the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NSBMB) hosted by Delta State University, Abraka, From 6th-7th May, 2025.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samuel O. Asagba , duly represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Hilary Owamah , informed the audience that the conference was not merely an academic ritual, but a strategic intellectual gathering where scholars, researchers, educators, and policymakers assemble to highlight cutting-edge knowledge in biochemistry and molecular biology as well as to forge new solutions to the challenges confronting our region and our nation at large .

    Speaking at the auspicious occasion, Vice-Chancellor, anchored on the theme of the conference “Advancing Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for National Development in the Era of Artificial Intelligence,” expressing that it is a compelling reminder of the urgent need to align scientific discovery with developmental priorities in this epoch of artificial intelligence. He, however, appreciated the convener of the event stating the impact of the colloquium in collaboration and enhancing the capacity to practice the profession beyond the approach of discipline but as a transformative medium to our society.

    The occasion was graced by the Hon. Commissioner for Higher Education, Delta State, Prof. Nyerhovwo Tonukari; some Principal Officers of the University, President of NSBMB and its national members including other members of staff of DELSU and pervasive invitees.

    DELSU GRADUATES 6401 STUDENTS, AS 101 BAG FIRST CLASS

    Delta State University, Abraka on Saturday , 26th April, 2025 graduated a total of 6401 students from different disciplines in the institution with 154 of them emerging with Doctor of Philosophy.

    The Vice – Chancellor, Professor Samuel Asagba, who disclosed this, gave the breakdown of graduands as 4706 for First Degree Programme, 505 for Diploma Programme, 360 for Affiliation Programme and 830 for Postgraduate School.

    The graduands also comprised 416 Masters degree awardees as well as 22 Masters of Philosophy and 238 who received Postgraduate Diplomas In the first degrees category, 101 graduands emerged with First Class, 1526 bagged Second Class Honours (Upper Division), 2556 recorded Second Class (Lower Division) just as 387 graduands came out with Third Class Honours. Also, 56 graduands came up with Unclassified (MBBS) and 77 others with Unclassified (B.Pharm).

    Welcoming guests, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Samuel Asagba, pointed out that inadequate funding and workforce shortages remain key challenges for the university.

    The Vice Chancellor also shared some notable achievements, including the construction of a road linking the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences and Faculty of Arts, the ongoing construction of the Faculty of Agriculture building (previously based at the Asaba campus), a 500-capacity lecture theatre at the Faculty of Arts Site III, and a block of five classrooms with offices.

    He reaffirmed DELSU’s commitment to delivering education that meets international standards, citing the university’s improved rankings and the swift accreditation of its programs by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

    Continuing, he said the university had attained 100 per cent accreditation of all its programmes, adding that it was recently ranked 20th position among over 300 Nigerian universities and 3rd position among state-owned universities in the country by the global SciVal Ranking tool of Elsevier.

    The Vice-Chancellor commended Governor Oborevwori, for his commitment to the growth and development of the citadel of higher academic learning.

    Earlier, the Pro Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council of DELSU, General Alexander Ogomudia, thanked Governor Sheriff Oborevwwori for the assistance he has rendered to the school and called on donor agencies and philanthropic individuals to contribute to the infrastructural growth of the university.

    While calling on the state government to fast track completion of all ongoing and abandoned projects in the school, he equally reminded graduands of the need to be good ambassadors of the institution in their various endeavours.

    Meanwhile, Governor Oborevwori has pledged to increase government support for DELSU) especially in the areas of infrastructure and development, just as he reassured the academic community of the government’s commitment to bridging gaps.

    “The state government would double its efforts to continually support. We will continue to tackle the recurrent issue of infrastructural gaps with the available resources. There is need for stakeholders to collaborate with the government to meet the needs of the University,” he stated.

    The Governor praised DELSU’s progress in the academic sphere, highlighting the university’s steady rise in national rankings. He also applauded the new Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Asagba, for the rapid completion of several projects within his first four months in office.

    Encouraging the new graduates, Oborevwori urged them to become agents of change globally. “Whatever problems we see in the world today are opportunities for growth. Keep learning, graduation does not mean the end of learning. Never give up on your dreams. Life is full of twist and turns, troubles and trials. Whatever happens, keep pressing,” he said.

    At the convocation, the university conferred honorary degrees to foremost entrepreneur and philanthropist, Chief Broderick Uvieoghene Arigbodi, Doctor of Science, renowned literary scholar, Professor Tanure Ojaide with Doctor of Letters, and outstanding industrialist and philanthropist, High Chief Eta Enahoro with Honorary Doctor of Business Administration.

    DELSU VC SET TO ESTABLISH CENTRE FOR PRODUCT MANAGEMENT AND RESEARCH COMMERCIALIZATION

    The Vice Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, has announced plans to establish a Centre for Product Development and Research Commercialisation. The initiative aims to foster practical, problem-solving research while boosting the university’s internally generated revenue and enhancing its global visibility. Professor Asagba made this announcement during the 111th inaugural lecture of the university, titled “Biotechnology: From the Laboratory to the Factory,” delivered by Professor Nyerhovwo Tonukari on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at the 750 Lecture Theatre A, Site III. Chairing the occasion, Professor Asagba underscored the vast economic potential of biotechnology if fully harnessed. He revealed that the proposed centre would be led by Professor Kporhuarho Anigboro, a biotechnology researcher at DELSU and a mentee of the inaugural lecturer. The Vice Chancellor also assured that the centre would receive adequate funding and pledged to implement key recommendations made during the lecture.

    In his inaugural lecture earlier, Professor Nyerhovwo Tonukari a Professor of Molecular Biotechnology, underscored the transformative potential of biotechnology in national development. He highlighted its capacity to provide economic empowerment for lecturers and researchers who can effectively leverage its opportunities. He posed critical questions to provoke reflection among Nigerian scientists, asking: What tangible contributions have Nigerian lecturers made in developing products that address societal challenges? How have research outputs translated into financial gains for the economy through commercialization? Expressing concern over the apparent lack of returns on the substantial investments in research by the government and other funding partners, he lamented that research efforts in Nigeria often fail to translate into impactful outcomes. He, therefore, challenged academics and researchers to prioritize commercially viable research that benefits both individuals and the nation at large.

    The Visitor to Delta State University and Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Oborevwori, urged researchers to explore the vast opportunities in biotechnology for national development. Represented by his Chief Strategist, Dr. Festus Okubor, the Governor commended the intellectual depth of the inaugural lecturer and emphasized the need for academics to leverage biotechnology for innovation and economic growth. He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the university in its research and development efforts.

    As is the university’s tradition, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Asagba after the lecture decorated, Professor Nyerhovwo Tonukari with the distinguished medal of inaugural lecturer of the university. Other highlights of the ceremony were musical rendition by the Department of Music, photo sessions of the inaugural lecturer with principal officers of the university as well as with family and friends.

    Dignitaries that were present at the inaugural lecture included the Vice Chancellor of DELSU, Prof Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba; Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Rose Okoh, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Hilary Owamah, Provost of Oleh Campus, Professor Elo Ibagere, Registrar of the University, Mrs Rufina Ufiofio, the University Bursar, Mrs Otimeyin Ekakitie-Omajuwa, the University Librarian, Dr Josephine Eruterio Onohwakpor, Provosts, Deans, Directors, staff and students of the university. Also in attendance were Dr Festus Okubor who represented the Visitor to the University and Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon.
