The Management of Delta State University, Abraka felicitated with the immediate past Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of DELSU Governing Council, Professor Sam Ejite Oyovbaire on the occasion of his 84th birthday celebration. Speaking during a visit to Oporaja in Okpe Local Government Area, the Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive of DELSU, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, who led the University management team, stated that the delegation was there to celebrate and rejoice with the octogenarian on the occasion of his birthday. Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba on behalf of Senate, Staff and Students of the University, specially congratulated the octogenarian on the milestone of 84th birthday celebration.

In his response, Professor Sam Oyovbaire expressed delight at the visit by the University Management team led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba. Professor Oyovbaire offered prayers for the success of Professor Asagba’s administration and for the continued growth and development of Delta State University (DELSU).

Delta State University, Abraka has formally inducted a new set of medical doctors during its 17th induction and oath-taking ceremony held on Monday, 21st July, 2025 at the 750 Lecture Theatre A, Site III, DELSU, Abraka. The event was graced by principal officers of the university, distinguished figures from the medical profession and proud family members of the inductees. In his remarks, Vice Chancellor of DELSU, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, commended the inductees for successfully going through the rigours of the medical training and achieving the enviable milestone of qualifying as medical doctors. He expressed hope that the careers of the newly inducted doctors would be distinguished by excellence, service and fulfilment. Professor Asagba also announced the offer of automatic employment for the two best graduating medical doctors: Dr Omoshola Oluwatosin and Dr Oghenetejiri Omamegebre.

Guest Lecturer and President, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN), Professor Peter Ebeigbe urged the newly inducted doctors to aspire beyond the ordinary, encouraging them to aim for the stars rather than settle for the sky. He maintained that such ambition would propel them to the pinnacle of their medical careers. Professor Ebeigbe concluded by challenging the inductees to thoughtfully make three critical choices in shaping their medical career which are: Who do I want to be in the profession in the next 10-15 years? Where do I want to be in profession in the next 10-15 years? and How do I get to where I want to be in the profession in the next 10-15 years?

Provost of College of Health Sciences, DELSU, Professor Emmanuel Odokuma, in his address welcomed all present for the 17th induction and oath taking ceremony of qualified medical doctors of the university. He also appreciated all who contributed in making the induction and oath-taking ceremony successful. Professor Odokuma further thanked the Vice Chancellor of DELSU for the consistent support the College has received from the university’s management to accomplish its goal and record meaningful success.

Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Professor Fatima Kyari, extended his congratulations to the newly inducted doctors for successfully completing their medical training. Professor Kyari, who was represented by Dr Tijjani Ali Mandaka, an Assistant Registrar in MDCN, proceeded to highlight the key steps required to solidify their standing within the medical profession.

The Vice Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, has been honoured with a Fellowship by the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NSBMB). The conferment ceremony which took place on Tuesday, 8th July, 2025 at Nasarawa State University, Keffi was the Society’s 41st Scientific Conference and General Assembly. Speaking during the conferment ceremony, President of NSBMB, Professor Matthew Wegwu said the selection process of the awardees was rigorous and transparent. He further noted that Professor Asagba and the other newly conferred Fellows were deemed deserving of the honour in recognition of their contributions to the advancement of the discipline and Association. Professor Wegwu tasked the newly inducted Fellows to be good ambassadors of the Society.

In his response, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba expressed his delight at being inducted as a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NSBMB). He pledged to remain committed to the development of the Society and affirmed that/the honour conferred on him by the Association will be well justified through continued dedication and service.

The fellowship conferment ceremony not only celebrates outstanding contributions to the field of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology but also highlights the value of purposeful academic leadership. For Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, the honour affirms his professional excellence and scholarly distinction. As Vice Chancellor of Delta State University, the recognition serves as a motivation to deepen his commitment to academic growth, research advancement, and institutional development. It will further strengthen his efforts to make a lasting and meaningful impact during his tenure. Other recipients of the Fellowship award by NSBMB are Professor Muazu Gusau Abubakar, Professor Ibrahim Hassan Garba, Professor Lawan Bala Burutai, Dr Chinelo Jaconta Nwosu, Professor Abubakar Gidado and Professor Dahiru Daniel.

The Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of the Social Sciences, Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka organised a one-day memorial lecture in honour of its departed colleague, Late Professor Monday Obaidjevwe Ogbomo. The Lecture, which took place on Wednesday June 4, 2025, at the Faculty of the Social Sciences (FSS) Mini Lecture Theatre, witnessed tributes from dignitaries who came to pay their last respect to the late Professor. Vice Chancellor of DELSU, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba admitted that the news of Professor Ogbomo’s demise came as a rude shock, especially on the heels of his recent elevation to the apex of the profession as a Full Professor of Library and Information Science. Professor Asagba commended the Late Professor Ogbomo for living a worthy life that has impacted his students, colleagues, academic community and humanity in general. Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Edmund Atakpo, Professor Asagba reminded attendees that life on earth is transient emphasising that everyone will leave this world. He concluded his remarks by challenging all to live a worthy life taking inspiration from the exemplary legacy of late Professor Monday Ogbomo.

In his opening remarks, the Dean of Faculty of the Social Sciences, Professor Sam Ogege, expressed gratitude to all those present for honouring a departed colleague. Professor Ogege concluded that Late Professor Monday Ogbomo really impacted lives, and concluded that his death was a loss to the faculty.

The Head of Library and Information Science Department, Professor Basil Enemute Iwhiwhu in his welcome address described Late Professor Monday Ogbomo as a seasoned scholar and a friend. He also said that the memorial lecture was to celebrate the legacy of the deceased. Professor Iwhiwhu further stated that the auspicious occasion was meant to stimulate conversations bordering on the late Professor Ogbomo’s area of professional contributions, and thereby further immortalise his memory and legacy within and beyond the academic community. He implored all to engage in meaningful conversation while paying tribute to a fallen colleague.

The guest speaker and immediate past Librarian of DELSU, Professor Stephen Osahon Uwaifo delivered a compelling lecture titled “Reaching Out, Reaching More: Marketing Library and Information Products and Services in the Digital Age”. While highlighting the dynamic and evolving nature of the library as a growing organism with vast potential for further development, Professor Uwaifo also acknowledged challenges that hinder effective marketing of library products in Nigeria. These obstacles included inadequate budgetary allocations, irregular power supply, and a shortage of skilled ICT professionals to drive innovation in the sector. Reflecting on the legacy of the late Professor Monday Ogbomo, whose dedication to the advancement of library and information science continues to inspire, Professor Uwaifo urged all stakeholders to actively contribute towards overcoming these challenges. He concluded with a passionate call for collective action to ensure the successful promotion and utilization of library products and services in the digital age.

In his tribute to his late father, Mr Onoriode Ogbomo eulogized the contribution of his father to academia which was seen in the various positions he held in the university. He expressed fulfilment at the contribution of his father to the academic world. Also, Chairman of Delta State Chapter of the Nigerian Library Association (NLA), Dr (Mrs) GloriaTinuoye described the Late Professor Ogbomo as a committed member who paid his annual dues while on his sick bed. She further said that the deceased impacted the Association tremendously.

The Delta State University (DELSU) community has been thrown into mourning as one of its staff, Dr Anthony Asiyai of the Department of Science Education was laid to rest yesterday. At the commendation service which took place on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at Atscan Hall, Site II, DELSU, Abraka, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba said he received the sad and shocking news of the demise of Dr Anthony Asiyai on the 29th of April, 2025. Professor Asagba who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Edmund Atakpo commended Late Dr Asiyai whom he described as calm, quiet and responsible as well as committed to his duties. The Vice Chancellor consoled the family of the late lecturer to take solace in the fact that God alone knows best and assured the family and university community that the late Dr Anthony Asiyai was surely now resting in the bosom of the Lord. The Vice Chancellor thereafter led the university community to observe a minute’s silence in honour of the deceased.

Head of the Department of Science Education where the deceased lectured until his death, Dr (Mrs) Janice Adjekpovu commended Late Dr Anthony Asiyai for being a staff who was available to lend a helping hand whenever he was called upon. She further stated that the deceased never reneged on his duties while alive. She prayed that the Lord will continue to console the family of the deceased.

Dean of the Faculty of Education, Professor (Mrs) Florence Ugoji eulogised Late Dr Anthony Asiyai describing him as a man who was dutiful and willing to assist others. She concluded that the deceased was a staff who would be remembered for his good works.

Chairman of ASUU-DELSU, Comrade Paul Opone in his oration recalled the activeness of the deceased before he took ill. Represented by Comrade Nicholas Alumona who is the Financial Secretary of the union, Comrade Opone lamented that despite the union’s hope for the deceased’s recovery from his ailment, it was shocked to only later receive the tragic news of his death. Comrade Opone later led the union in singing the solidarity song for its fallen comrade as one of the marks of the last rites and respect accorded members by the union on such occasion .

The commendation service also witnessed the filing past the casket of the deceased led by the representative of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Edmund Atakpo.

The remains of the Late Dr Anthony Asiyai was later taken to Abari town in Patani for interment. Late Dr Anthony Asiyai joined the services of the university in 2018 as Lecturer II.
