CHANGE OF POWER BETWEEN THE OUTGOING VC,PROF. EGWUNYENGA AND INCOMING VC, PROF. ASAGBA

The new Vice Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka, Prof Samuel Asagba, has announced that the Faculty of Management Science Complex in Abraka Campus will be renamed Prof Andy Egwunyenga Complex, in recognition of the tremendous achievements of the outgone Vice Chancellor. Prof Asagba stated this in Abraka on Saturday during the official handover ceremony which took place at the Vice Chancellor’s Conference Room and immediately followed by a special mass in St Paul’s Catholic Chaplaincy.

The Vice Chancellor described Prof Andy Ogochukwu Egwunyenga, who was Vice Chancellor from December 1, 2019 to November 30, 2024, as a revolutionary leader whose leadership style positively touched the lives of staff, students, host community and all stakeholders in the university. Prof. Asagba highlighted that Delta State University, Abraka achieved remarkable milestones, including increment in number of academic programmes and student enrollment, an improved income base, a consistently stable academic calendar, extensive facility development, and notable enhancements in environmental beautification. He particularly praised Prof Egwunyenga’s administration for being able to complete the Faculty of Management Science Complex within a record-breaking eleven months. He said that there was need to immortalise such an achievement hence the naming of the complex after Prof Egwunyenga as a testament that such things were achievable. While wishing the outgone Vice Chancellor, who is also retiring from the services of the university, well in his future endeavours, he promised to take the university to the next level and solicited the support of all.

Speaking at the special mass held to thank God for the completion of his tenure as Vice Chancellor, Prof Egwunyenga expressed gratitude to God for enabling him to contribute his quota to the development of humanity through his position as Vice Chancellor. He emphasized that the accomplishments attributed to his tenure as Vice Chancellor were not the result of a “one-man show” but rather a collective effort made possible by the unwavering support of the government, the University’s Governing Council and Senate, principal officers (including the incoming Vice Chancellor), staff, students, the church, and the host community. He thanked everyone for the cooperation he enjoyed in office and appealed that the same should be extended to the administration of Prof Asagba as Vice Chancellor.

The handover ceremony and special mass were attended by the wife of the outgone Vice Chancellor, Prof (Mrs) Joyce Ebele Egwunyenga, the wife of the new Vice Chancellor, Mrs Elizabeth Asagba, the Pro Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council of Dennis Osadebey University, Asaba, Prof Robert Ikomi, Vice Chancellor of the Delta State University of Science and Technology, Prof Jacobs Snapps Oboreh, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof (Mrs) Rosemary Ngozi Okoh, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof Ochuko Anomohanran, Provost of Oleh Campus, Prof Elo Ibagere, Rector of Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, Prof Emmanuel Ufuophu-Biri, Rector of Delta State Maritime Polytechnic, Burutu, Prof James Okoro, University Registrar, Mrs Rufina Ufuoma Ufiofio, other principal officers, representatives of the host community as well as staff and students of the university.

  • History Of the University

    History Of the University

Delta State University, Abraka has been historically recorded as a Centre of Education. It started as a Government Teachers’ Training College during the colonial era and some years into the post-colonial era. It became a College of Education that awarded Nigerian Certificate of Education (N.C.E.) from 1971-1985. In 1981, it was affiliated to the University of Benin, Benin City and consequently offered degree programmes from 1981 till 1985 when it became the Faculty of Education of the then Bendel State University with its main campus at Ekpoma. The creation of Edo and Delta States in August 1991 and the conversion of the main campus of the then Bendel State University, Ekpoma to become Edo State University in December 1991, necessitated the establishment of an autonomous Delta State University, Abraka on 30 April 1992 by the then Executive Governor of the State, Olorogun Felix Ibru.

Delta State University, Abraka started with five Faculties, namely:

    • Faculty of Agriculture
    • Faculty of Education
    • Faculty of Arts
    • Faculty of Science and
    • Faculty of the Social Sciences.

In 1995, the State Government introduced a policy of having three campuses that should be spread within the three senatorial districts in the State. In view of this policy, three campuses were established to include the main campus in Abraka, Anwai-Asaba Oleh and campuses. Currently, with a student population of about 36,000 (in the 2007/08 session), the University offers a range of programmes from the full-time certificate, diploma and degree programmes to part-time evening and weekend degree programmes. The University offers postgraduate studies up to a doctoral level. A staff/student counselling centre, an e-learning centre, student accommodation and sporting facilities amidst others are available support services. It is one of over twenty-five state-owned universities which are overseen and accredited by the National Universities Commission.
