    DELSU COMMUNITY MOURNS AS LATE DR ANTHONY ASIYAI GOES HOME

    The Delta State University (DELSU) community has been thrown into mourning as one of its staff, Dr Anthony Asiyai of the Department of Science Education was laid to rest yesterday. At the commendation service which took place on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at Atscan Hall, Site II, DELSU, Abraka, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba said he received the sad and shocking news of the demise of Dr Anthony Asiyai on the 29th of April, 2025. Professor Asagba who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Edmund Atakpo commended Late Dr Asiyai whom he described as calm, quiet and responsible as well as committed to his duties. The Vice Chancellor consoled the family of the late lecturer to take solace in the fact that God alone knows best and assured the family and university community that the late Dr Anthony Asiyai was surely now resting in the bosom of the Lord. The Vice Chancellor thereafter led the university community to observe a minute’s silence in honour of the deceased.

    Head of the Department of Science Education where the deceased lectured until his death, Dr (Mrs) Janice Adjekpovu commended Late Dr Anthony Asiyai for being a staff who was available to lend a helping hand whenever he was called upon. She further stated that the deceased never reneged on his duties while alive. She prayed that the Lord will continue to console the family of the deceased.

    Dean of the Faculty of Education, Professor (Mrs) Florence Ugoji eulogised Late Dr Anthony Asiyai describing him as a man who was dutiful and willing to assist others. She concluded that the deceased was a staff who would be remembered for his good works.

    Chairman of ASUU-DELSU, Comrade Paul Opone in his oration recalled the activeness of the deceased before he took ill. Represented by Comrade Nicholas Alumona who is the Financial Secretary of the union, Comrade Opone lamented that despite the union’s hope for the deceased’s recovery from his ailment, it was shocked to only later receive the tragic news of his death. Comrade Opone later led the union in singing the solidarity song for its fallen comrade as one of the marks of the last rites and respect accorded members by the union on such occasion .

    The commendation service also witnessed the filing past the casket of the deceased led by the representative of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Edmund Atakpo.

    The remains of the Late Dr Anthony Asiyai was later taken to Abari town in Patani for interment. Late Dr Anthony Asiyai joined the services of the university in 2018 as Lecturer II.

    Those present at the commendation service included Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Edmund Atakpo, who represented the Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, the University Librarian, Dr (Mrs) Josephine Onohwakpor, Provost of College of Health Sciences, Professor Emmanuel Odokuma, Dean of Faculty of Education, Professor (Mrs) Florence Ugoji, Director of Intensive and Part-Time Programme, Professor Emmanuel Mitaire Tarurhor, Comrade Nicholas Alumona who represented the Chairman of ASUU-DELSU, immediate past Director of Centre for Continuing Education Programme (CCEP), Professor Callistar Obi, the University Public Relations Officer, Mr Henry Eseka, Head of Science Education Department, Dr (Mrs) Janice Adjekpovu, staff, students and family members of the deceased, notable among whom was Professor (Mrs) Romina Asiyai, wife of the deceased, and others.

    DELSU MANAGEMENT SENDS-OFF PROFESSOR (MRS) ROSEMARY NGOZI OKOH AS SHE OFFICIALLY BOWS OUT AS DVC (ADMINISTRATION)

    The Management of Delta State University, Abraka has organised a private send-off ceremony for the immediate past Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor (Mrs) Rosemary Ngozi Okoh, as she officially bowed out of the position after four years of meritorious service. The brief, but significant ceremony which took place on Thursday witnessed glowing commendations from the University’s Management team. The Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba described Professor (Mrs) Rosemary Okoh as a woman of intellect and character. Professor Asagba further commended her for her excellent service to the University as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) and the manner she discharged her duties with a sense of godliness and morality. He concluded with heartfelt wishes for God’s abundant blessings upon Professor Rosemary Okoh and her family.

    Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Hilary Owamah commended the outgoing Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) for her forthright stance in the discharge of her duties while in office. Professor Hilary Owamah wished Professor (Mrs) Rosemary Okoh the best in her future endeavours.

    In her commendation, the University Bursar, who was represented by Mr Joel Ojigbo-Ijatomi, recalled how the outgoing Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) served the university with integrity and dedication in all her assignments.

    On his part, the Provost of Oleh Campus, Professor Elo Ibagere affirmed that the intellectual capability of the outgoing Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor (Mrs.) Rosemary Okoh, is beyond question, noting that she consistently demonstrated intellectual depth in various capacities during their time working together. He concluded by emphasizing that she served the university commendably: academically, morally, and spiritually.

    In response to the tributes in her honour, Professor (Mrs.) Rosemary Okoh expressed heartfelt gratitude for the kind words and accolades shared during the ceremony. She offered a prayer for God’s blessings upon the DELSU Management for the recognition and honour bestowed on her.

    VIRTUAL CEREMONY AS DELSU MATRICULATES 82 STUDENTS INTO OPEN DISTANCE & E – LEARNING INSTITUTE OF NURSING

    In the year 2024, the National University Commission (NUC) had graciously approved the Open Distance and E-learning Programme for Delta State University, Abraka, as a strategic means of creating an online presence and opportunity for people to connect virtually at their conveniences to annul distance barriers and aids globalization dynamics. DELSU has not only ascended in ranking as the best State University in South-South and South-East and the third best State in Nigeria, but also grown to become an earnest digital institution in line with the advancement of technology; strengthening the conglomeration of people all over the world to access our academic prowess through online teaching, learning and research for the award of Bachelor Degree in Nursing .

    Matriculation ceremony is a requirement in higher institutions and the oath is an admission into the intellectual community because it confers on fresh students , full rights of studentship. By this academic ritual, the students would become formally admitted into the Delta State University, Abraka.

    One Hundred and Fifteen (115) candidates applied but only Eighty-Two (82) were offered provisional admission into the ODL Programme in Nursing. The pioneer matriculating pioneer students attended the ceremony virtually , live and direct from different geographical locations.

    The people’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samuel O. Asagba duly repesented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Hilary Ijeoma Owamah, in his speech, noted that the university management has provided a flexible school fees payment plan for a successful online degree awarding programme including the provision of machineries being put in place for a flexible system to facilitate learning; these include modern information technology studio, modules, digital tools, and viable interactive platforms. He further announced that the university has begun the process of expanding the ODL programme to cover more Departments and Programmes in the 2025/2026 academic session as this will spread our reach to many university degree seekers all over the world. As a father, he urged the pioneer matriculants to be hardworking , observe the rules and regulations of the university and refrain from activities which are inimical to the growth of the University as well as living responsibly to contribute positively not only to the Nigerian society, but to the world at large.

    The iconic first female Registrar of the institution, Mrs Rufina Ufiofio administered the matriculation oath on the matriculants as they chorused uniformly in coordinated repeatatable manner. She also encouraged the Nursing students to pursue this profession chosen by them with outmost diligence.

    Being qualified by work experience, certification, age, and intellect for employment into constituted organization is not a consummate and requisite capacity to serve. There must be a positive transition into the new work environment via professional trainings and moral support to be conversant with the organization’s culture and standard policies.

    Despite the fact that Delta State University, Abraka contributes maximally to job opportunities in Delta State; it’s one of the leading institutions in Nigeria that is magnanimously regulated and widely known for methodicalness of staff-ship. Every fresh staff must be groomed in order to harmonize with the institution’s standard and professionalism.

    Earlier today, it was another phenomenal experience for the latest batch of employees taken into the Registry Division of the university. The university management organized an orientation programme to officially welcome, inaugurate and introduce the roles, structure and modus operandi established for all member of staff of the university.

    The major voice -over at the event was taken by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samuel O. Asagba, duly represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) , Prof. Hilary Ijeoma Owamah who described “Integrity, punctuality and appropriate delivery” as major qualities that a bonafide member of staff of DELSU should possess. He further advised them to continually develop themselves for higher responsibilities and greater deliveries in fostering self improvement, positional elevations and to add value for the general growth of the university. He also, encouraged the new staff to be committed to the actualization of the vision and mission of the university.

    Also speaking at the orientation ceremony was the Registrar , Mrs Rufina Ufiofio , who extensively presented the day-to-day obligations of the registry unit and the rules governing their affairs. Other Senior Members of the staff in the registry department with ranks like Deputy Registrar (DR),Principal Assistant Registrar (PAR) and Senior Assistant Registrar (SAR), also echoed the dos and cons of the university.

    The Vice Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, has welcomed the National Universities Commission (NUC) Resource Verification teams who came to the university for their assignments. In his remarks at a brief ceremony on Monday at the Vice Chancellor’s Conference Room, Site II, DELSU, Professor Samuel Asagba commended the visiting teams for making themselves available for the exercise. He described the team’s efforts as significant sacrifices aimed at shaping the lives of the younger generation through university education. Professor Samuel Asagba concluded with optimism, expressing hope that the NUC Advisory Team’s visit would yield positive outcomes.

    Earlier in her speech, Mrs Mercy Nwoke who led the NUC advisory teams, thanked the Vice Chancellor for the warm welcome accorded them. She informed the Vice Chancellor of their mission to DELSU which is for resource verification for five new programmes to be domiciled in the faculties of Education and the Social Sciences respectively. They are Religious Education, French Education, Social Work, Entrepreneurship, as well as Criminology and Security Studies. She assured the Vice Chancellor that the Team will conduct their tasks with all due diligence.

    The Director of Academic Planning (DAP) of DELSU, Professor Felix Oghenemaro Enwa joined the Vice Chancellor in acknowledging the efforts of the visitors and informed them of the University’s readiness for the exercise.

    A crowd-puller feast of thanksgiving was hosted by DELSU Don and Dame, Professor (Mrs) Rosemary Ngozi Okoh Yesterday, being Friday, 16th May, 2025 at one of the University’s Chapel , Our Saviour’s Chapel, Site II, Delta State University, Abraka to mark her End of Tenure as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) .

    Prof. Rosemary Okoh, who is a multidisciplinary Scholar and Professor of Agricultural Economics has served DELSU meritoriously for over 30 years, as substantive Head of Department, Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences and member of many Committees , since she was appointed as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) in 2021 during the tenure of Professor Andy Egwunyenga, became a member of the Governing Council, acted for as well representing the VC within the University and outside , both nationally and internationally with good reports . She has also chaired many Committees. Notable among the Committees is the Convocation Committee having conducted the 30th Anniversary and the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th Convocation ceremonies, with many recorded successes .

    Testifying at the event , was the husband of the celebrant, Professor Patrick N. Okoh, who was one time Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the Delta State University,Abraka corroborated that his heart swells with immense pride and admiration for all that his wife has accomplished as an academic in dedication, unwavering commitment and insightful leadership which as undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the university.

    The immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Andy Egwunyenga who was the Chairman of the occasion expressed his heartfelt gratitude to God for giving Prof. Rosemary Okoh the strength, wisdom and grace throughout her 4 years tenure. He however praised the DVC (Administration) for her dedication, hardworking and unwavering passion for education and service. He furthered nicknamed her as “Silent Workerholic “ with a gentle spirit and loyalty.

    A special moment was given to people to present their gifts, goodwill messages and free speeches in honour of the celebrant.

    One of the significant visions of Delta State University, Abraka, amongst learning, research , innovation, and the dissemination of knowledge is “community service”.

    Over the years, DELSU has contributed immensely to Abraka community in fostering innovation, increasing property value, promoting social cohesion, enhancing educational opportunities, promoting local culture, and attracting tourism. Today was an exceptional episode of community engagement as the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samuel O. Asagba , fitly represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Hilary Ijeoma Owamah, led the National Association of Doctors in the University Health Services, NADUHS DELSU and the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) DELSUTH on a catchy Wednesday free-medical programme.

    Over 500 residents with multifarious health conditions at Umiaghwa & Oruarivie Kingdoms, Abraka assembled in an integrated manner at the Oruarivie and Umiaghgwa town halls, Abraka and were individually rendered medical screening, diagnosis, treatment , health education and referrals without any medical fees. Free medical eye glasses, assorted drugs, and others were equally given out.

    It was indeed a consummate charitable gesture by the amiable vice-chancellor.

    The residents expressed their gratitude to the vice-chancellor, the university medical team, and the entire university community for such a generous and supportive scheme rendered to them. They appealed that the university should continue with the good work.

    The South-South Zonal Conference of the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NSBMB) hosted by Delta State University, Abraka, From 6th-7th May, 2025.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samuel O. Asagba , duly represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Hilary Owamah , informed the audience that the conference was not merely an academic ritual, but a strategic intellectual gathering where scholars, researchers, educators, and policymakers assemble to highlight cutting-edge knowledge in biochemistry and molecular biology as well as to forge new solutions to the challenges confronting our region and our nation at large .

    Speaking at the auspicious occasion, Vice-Chancellor, anchored on the theme of the conference “Advancing Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for National Development in the Era of Artificial Intelligence,” expressing that it is a compelling reminder of the urgent need to align scientific discovery with developmental priorities in this epoch of artificial intelligence. He, however, appreciated the convener of the event stating the impact of the colloquium in collaboration and enhancing the capacity to practice the profession beyond the approach of discipline but as a transformative medium to our society.
